New York Considers Background Checks for 3D Printer Owners

A bill aims to curb the production of 3D-printed ghost guns.

Towards 3D Printer Regulation in New York

In response to the growing proliferation of ghost guns made with 3D printing, New York State is seeking to tighten controls. State Senator Jenifer Rajkumar has introduced a bill (A2228) requiring FBI-reviewed fingerprinting and criminal background checks for anyone wishing to purchase a 3D printer capable of manufacturing firearms or their components.

A Growing and Difficult-to-Control Threat

Since the first 3D-printed guns appeared in 2013, their capabilities have significantly advanced. Today, deadly and complex weapons can be produced for less than $500. However, only 15 U.S. states currently have specific laws regulating these weapons. This new bill aims to address gaps in existing regulations, as law enforcement struggles to enforce bans already in place.
