Bambu Lab has announced a software update that introduces an authorization and authentication mechanism to secure critical actions on its 3D printers. This controversial update, aimed at reducing cyberattacks, has sparked debate within the community.

Enhancing Security Against Digital Threats
The update includes a protection mechanism requiring official authorization for critical operations, such as starting prints via LAN or cloud, firmware updates, and managing temperature settings. The stated goal is to mitigate hacking risks. The beta firmware for the X1 series is available starting today, with a full rollout planned for January 23. P and A series printers will also receive the update, although no release date has been specified.
This initiative also necessitates software updates for Bambu Studio and Bambu Handy, while rendering some third-party software like OrcaSlicer incompatible. To address these restrictions, Bambu Lab offers “Bambu Connect,” a solution for remote control using exported files, though some users find it less convenient.
A Community Divided Between Freedom and Security
The manufacturer has taken a firm stance on systematically integrating this technology into its future models, despite criticism. While the decision aims to enhance security, it could complicate user experience and limit compatibility with third-party solutions.
Although Bambu Lab argues these measures are essential to protect users, some fear a loss of freedom in operating their 3D printers. Striving to balance control and simplicity, Bambu Lab faces the challenge of convincing a community keen to maintain its flexibility while ensuring device security.
